Canada - Consumer has too much debt?

Maybe that was one of the reasons TARGET decided to exit CANADA and shut down their Canadian operations.

Target store closures: What will happen to 17,600 employees?

The collapse of Target in Canada has led to one of the largest private-sector layoffs in recent Canadian history, but some analysts disagree over how the more than 17,000 employees will be absorbed into the workforce.
------------------------------------------------------------------

This could be the first of many events yet to hit Canada as their economy contracts and 'forced' de-leveraging occurs. The country does have a vast amount of natural resources which could be excellent buys if/when they get caught up in any sell off.

I own two of their pipeline companies: Pembina Pipeline Corporation (PBA) & Veresen Inc. (FCGYF) that I try do periodic investments in. Long term they should do fine but could sell off if we see a fall in the Canadian markets.

I also own Inter Pipeline Ltd. (IPPLF) which has some exposure in a western Canadian pipeline but they also have investments located in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, and Ireland.

My investment strategy is simple, own a piece of the infrastructure (and associated revenue streams) that move those valuable natural resources to market. The big growing markets are all in Asia including China and Japan.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another possible Infrastructure play that may/could get into value territory is Brookfield Infrastructure Partners L.P. (BIP). I do not own it but their collection of revenue producing assets are interesting. They are headquartered in Canada but own assets around the world.

The company provides energy transportation, distribution, and storage services through 15,500 kilometers of natural gas transmission lines primarily in the United States; and has approximately 50,000 gas distribution customers, as well as 300 billion cubic feet of natural gas storage capacity in the United States and Canada.

They have expanded into Australia (recently acquired Vale's railroad & port facilities that move iron ore) and even Brazil (they own a toll road). At one time they also owned quite a bit of timber resources but they may have sold that division.

Brookfield's Infrastructure Partners Offers Consistent Growth In Dividends And Cash Flows

If, BIP gets caught up in any sell off in Canadian equities, this would be a good one to add at/below $35.00/share. I am still researching it as my focus was on finding non-oil related MLP's possibly ones that focused on the movement of electricity (using copper nano-tube fiber distribution networks) and/or owned the infrastructure distribution network so they could deploy such new emerging technologies into their business model.

Note: This was the emerging technology that got me thinking about Brookfield (Spekulatius is the physicist in the group and probably has a better understanding of this emerging technology).

New discovery shows carbon nanotubes can produce powerful waves that could be harnessed for new energy systems.

So for me, the value is in the cheap natural resources and the most efficient way to deliver those resources (including electricity) to the end users.
