Gus, Great Post!...you gave me some stuff to chew on.

I think Fujitsu's R+D is good. I will say that I have visited Nagano and am impressed with all I saw though it was over a year ago.

Thanks for the sneak peek link..I had not seen it.

I could not agree more with your comment about how these wars defer focus on the leading edge stuff. It is a shame. But I will say it again. I still like Seagate. A Lot! Al Shugart is as unassuming as a CEO as you could ever meet but he is tough as nails and I also like the results of the fairly recent reshuffle in manufacturing. Seagate does ok in the scenario we have prevailing today. From reading the thread I suspect I am more of a long termer then most of you. I can only remeber one time that I jumped on a short term opportunity and the memory still scathes. (Don't ever ask me about cotton futures, I will disappear in a puff of apoplexy)

Can you turn me on to the Lehman stuff? I am very interested in how the mass migration to the Dell model will affect our group and especially down the chain to the cap equip guys.

I think you are right about Seagate prepping the channel for the new technology. Its a great thing to watch considering 10 years ago they didnt have anything to prep the channel with. I really like their commit to research and the early work they seem to be doing with OEMs. Before the advent of the "new Seagate" which started after their acquisition of CDC-Imprimus I was not a fan of this company.

On the fluid bearing stuff I believe that Seagate is ahead of the pack and that it is an important enabling technology. I have seen some comparative resonance tests (resonance wrecks havoc in a r/w channel) and it is very very iimpressive. But part of my belief is based on more vis with what they are doing then we have with Fujitsu and IBM. I have to believe that both are working on the technology as well.

Another note: Have you noticed anything in the lit on static head load? It seems to be a major point by IBM for the future. Parking the heads on a mechanical rest instead of landing them on the disks virtually eliminates concern about stiction/friction failures. Also allows much smoother disks which in turn means much lower flying or psuedo contact resulting in higfher linear density. Hasn't been done in a big way before because of added cost. Sorry, dont have numbers on that. But the only mfr that did it before was Intellistor which is now, of course, part of Fujitsu.
Regards,
Stitch

<<Lehman's estimates of channel inventory with about 2 weeks to go:

Desktop - ~13 weeks
High end - ~10 weeks

>> Gus, In reviewing the Lehman report, they indicated 13 weeks for high end inventory. I didn't see a desktop figure. The other major question is whether we're near the end of the inventory reductions by OEMs which could easily mean that total inventories have been reduced and normal demand should flow through.
