Joni Ernst Delivers The Worst Possible GOP ‘Rebuttal’ To State Of The Union
AUTHOR: RYAN DENSON JANUARY 21, 2015 9:35 AM

I honestly feel embarrassed for the GOP for their pathetic choice for a response. It’s hard to make yourself sound like a “small town American” when you’re so primed up with a fake smile like a Washington elitist.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what the GOP did with their choice in Joni Ernst, who gave the GOP rebuttal to the State of the Union.

Only it wasn’t a rebuttal. See, a real rebuttal is when you tackle what the other side said, and try to convince people of why your positions are better than theirs, and what direction you plan to take. Joni Ernst started her “rebuttal” off with:

“I am not going to respond to a speech.”

Great start.

[iframe width="300" height="250" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" vspace="0" hspace="0" allowtransparency="true" scrolling="no" allowfullscreen="true" id="aswift_1" name="aswift_1" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; left: 0px; position: absolute; top: 0px;"][/iframe]
Ernst followed up with an android-like tone:

“I’d like to have a conversation about the new Republican Congress you just elected, and how we plan to make Washington focus on your concerns again. We heard the message you sent in November — loud and clear. And now we’re getting to work to change the direction Washington has been taking our country.”

What does that mean?

“…boost manufacturing, wages, and jobs right here, at home. Let’s simplify America’s outdated and loophole-ridden tax code.”

So everything Obama proposed? Blanketed under a story of a young girl from Iowa that tugs at the heart strings, Ernst could not come up with a single legitimate rebuttal to President Obama’s record, and his proposals. Remember, Ernst voted against an amendment that would require using American steel, made in American plants, by American workers.

That’s another thing about a rebuttal. You offer new ideas. Joni Ernst offered no new ideas. She trashed Obamacare as a “failure,” and proposed we pass the Keystone Pipeline.

In an attempt to sound like she’s ready to work on our behalf, Ernst closed with:

“Congress is back to work on your behalf, ready to make Washington focus on your concerns again. We know America faces big challenges. But history has shown there’s nothing our nation, and our people, can’t accomplish.

“The President has already expressed some support for these kinds of ideas. We’re calling on him now to cooperate to pass them.”

What does that entail?

repealing Obamacarepushing the Trans Pacific Partnership (which some people call NAFTA on steroids)keeping the actual loopholes open so her Koch buddies can continue to reign in all the wealth while the rest get left behindThat’s what she, and her colleagues who now control Congress, want to do for you. What a rebuttal.

“Americans have been hurting, but when we demanded solutions, too often Washington responded with the same stale mindset that led to failed policies…”

Yes, 55 Obamacare repeal attempts, countless Benghazi hearings and a government shutdown are the solutions Americans “demanded.”

Joni Ernst’s “rebuttal” was worse than Rubio, Jindal and McMorris-Rodgers. Sorry, GOP, you fell way short again.
