"So why was Sine fired? What he said was a lot less offensive than the other cartoons. "

The first and most correct answer will be least satisfying... but, that's just reality. He was fired by a prior editor, in a different environment, back in 2008... and now its 2015... and things aren't the same. Odds are he'd not fired for that today... given the trends are what they are... and the change that has occurred has occurred... even if a lot of the movement has occurred only in the last few weeks... that's the fact.

"Not that I give a damn about who was offended by which cartoon. But for Charlie to hide behind the banner of free speech is extreme in hypocrisy."

I don't see hypocrisy...

But, I do see a lot of confusion, which their bit addresses imporperly as problems with "the geometry" of the issue... when what that really means isn't that map is wrong... but that the observer is lost... and can't read the map or make sense out of it.

There are LOTS of ways in which Europe's history with their Jewish population and the legacy of their treatment in the prior century... is going to be out of synch with modern reality.

There isn't a close equivalence between the issues Europe has with Jews and Arabs...

Haters of Jews... haven't gone away. The problem is growing, again... the history requires paying attention... and a lot of that just isn't about free speech... but other stuff.

But, semitic Jews in Europe haven't been killing westerners while trying to impose the Jewish religion on the locals ? While it is mostly the new immigrants... who are posing growing risks of violence against Jews ? Jews aren't leaving France today... because of Marine Le Pan... and the French right...

["So why was Sine fired? What he said was a lot less offensive than the other cartoons. Not that I give a damn about who was offended by which cartoon. But for Charlie to hide behind the banner of free speech is extreme in hypocrisy."]

My answer had two parts.

The first part was "Free speech requires that there is an absolute right to offend others". I believe that to be true. However, last I checked, the world rarely bases its decisions on my opinions.

The second part, as far as why Europe thinks as they do in the instance, was "History explains it." And, from there we didn't proceed to address... HOW.

So, here's that, which explains the second part... without it having any reference or practical relationship to the first.
