Audio Spec Discussed At First DVD Forum Meeting
(12/17/97; 3:39 p.m. EST)
By Yoshik Hara, EE Times

The DVD Forum held its first general meeting in
Tokyo this month amid mushrooming membership
from the original 10 to 122 companies worldwide.

"The DVD Forum is a rare organization in the world
that will continuously work on setting DVD
specifications incorporating new technologies," said
Taizo Nishimuro, president of Toshiba, which is the
chair company of the group.

The DVD Forum has already completed specifications
for DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, and
DVD-R formats. "The forum will continue to work on
setting specifications, such as for DVD-Audio and
DVD professional applications," Nishimuro said.

The expanding rolls -- now 52 principal voting
members and 70 associate members -- comes at a
time when some members, such as Sony and Philips,
have jeopardized group unity by proposing formats in
next-generation video, audio, and RAM disks that
differ with those of the forum.

Commenting on the conflicts, Hisashi Yamada, a
technology executive at Toshiba who is chairing the
Technical Coordination Group of the forum, said, "The
DVD Forum is a voluntary organization, and even if its
members propose other formats, the forum would not
try to control the activity. But I believe the framework
the DVD Forum has established is reasonable and is
supported by related industries."

As the base of the formatting activity, the forum has
formed two new working groups (WG): copy
protection WG and a WG for DVD professional use,
in addition to the existing six working groups. These
groups, which involve new members, will discuss
DVD specs in each field.

Among them, Audio WG is preparing version 0.9
specifications, to be announced by year end, for the
DVD-Audio format. The DVD-RAM WG is now
working for a 4.7-gigabyte system to announce
version 1.9, pre-final specifications, due in June.
