Air currents travel orders of magnitude faster than water currents. The Jet stream, while fast, is much higher in the atmosphere and tends to change routes relatively slowly.

The point, of which you take great efforts to try and avoid, is that it is the tropical storms which which give sudden energetic pushes to air at ground level. This is the type of activity which sends a dramatic weather front. The jet stream and currents make for trends.
