Al,
Until they get sick...then the rest of us lose "choice" ... they are the ones with which I least sympathize frankly.
What are you talking about? Emergency room care? That's a popular myth.

I don't see how the fact that they choose not to get insurance reduces "choice" for others.

Al......My experience with the quality of my healthcare is the same as Tench's....ie it hasn't changed for at least 10 years......but IBM, in my opinion, screwed me this year. Last year I (maybe you too) was offered 3K by IBM to buy my own insurance and I did....through the web site they set up to assist retiree's, ie Extend Health, now called something else. No problems except I thought the Extend Health people were not too good and the web site not too user friendly but I selected MVP and enrolled thru Extend Health. This year MVP raised my premium 74% so I searched again and found an equivalent or better plan than MVP using another web site this year that did a nice job of comparing plans. A week ago I called Extend Health to get my 3K deposited directly into my checking account only to learn that since I didn't enroll through them, I lost the 3K.....ouch!!

I checked and found a booklet IBM sent us last year that spelled out the Extend Health requirement but what pisses me off is that they told me they knew that I signed with my new plan in November. I insisted they should have pointed out my stupidity at that time so I could enroll through them because they had a good plan (using the 3K) but I liked the nice spread sheet the other web site and thought nothing of enrolling directly with the insurance company.... I spent a lot of hours on the phone but couldn't make a dent.....truth be told it will only cost me about 1K more with my new plan.....
