NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS CORP is considering giving away its
browser to do battle against software giant Microsoft Corp, a spokeswoman for
the company said. "We're keeping our options open at this point," said the
spokeswoman, commenting on remarks made by Netscape CEO James
Barksdale in a briefing to trade press. Barksdale was quoted as saying Netscape
continuously reviews its pricing and would not stop short of giving away the
browser if it could drive other business over the longer term. "We look at it from
time to time," Barksdale said. "And if it seems to be a driver (of revenue), we're
not opposed to taking that (decision) if it's profitable over the long haul." (Reuters
