On Friday, first lady Michelle Obama spoke at a panel event held by Got Your 6, an organization that “encourages writers, directors, and producers in the entertainment industry to portray veterans accurately and responsibly.”

Despite criticism from Democrats over box office hit American Sniper glorifying war and violence, Obama said that the film accurately portrayed the experience of veterans and the toll it takes on military families:

“[It] reflects those wrenching stories that I’ve heard- the complex journeys that our men and women in uniform endure,” said Obama. “The complicated moral decisions they are tasked with every day. The stresses of balancing love of family with a love of country. And the challenges of transitioning back home to their next mission in life.”

At the panel event, Got Your 6, a military term meaning “I’ve got your back,” launched its 6 Certification program, where movies and TV shows depicting veterans will be awarded based on producers agreeing to one of six specific tasks. Some of these tasks include “consulting with real veterans or family members while creating projects, casting a veteran in a substantial role, and hiring a veteran as a writer.”

Mrs. Obama went on to cite why the portrayal of veterans in movies is so important:

“The vast majority of Americans will have never seen these stories or grasp these issues without portrayals like this.”
