You may very well be right!! Sometimes the highly volatile stock gives the early warning sign. Jabil had an intraday move of 50% in two days, called perfectly by Paul Klemenic, the guru of the ECM thread.

However, I remember 1973-4. Such moves in the primary speculative stocks were fakeouts to be followed by plunges to new lows - until most stocks were down 50-90%. I am inclined to believe this is more like 1990, like you said.
