UNIONS job is to represent workers and get as much as possible for them in a contract. Just like management has lawyers to take as much as possible. Unless you had a seniority clause (doubtful) for promotions the union has no say in promotions. Many non union companies promote exactly as you say...favoritism...nepotism....and stupidity. So yes it is a unions job to squeeze as much as they can...that's what the membership pays them for...to get them the best possible contract...if they don't then they are negligent in their duties...as for productivity,,,well following safety rules and federal regulations will lower that...but you will go home alive....if you DIE on the job in a crash falsifying your haul record driving and fall asleep....you will be forgotten in a week by your company. I'm sure there are many safety rules in a steel mill that you would not follow if you had no representation.....that's how unions came about...think COAL MINERS!!!
