As longwave radiation gets trapped by CO 2 , the Earth starts to warm, impacting various parts of the climate system. Sea ice and snow cover melt, turning brilliant white reflectors of sunlight into darker spots. The atmosphere grows moister because warmer air can hold more water vapor, which absorbs more shortwave radiation. Both of these feedbacks lessen the amount of shortwave radiation that bounces back into space, and the planet warms rapidly at the surface. Meanwhile, like any physical body experiencing warming, Earth sheds longwave radiation more effectively, canceling out the longwave-trapping effects of CO2. However, a darker Earth now absorbs more sunlight, tipping the scales to net warming from shortwave radiation.“So there are two types of radiation important to climate, and one of them gets affected by CO 2 , but it’s the other one that’s directly driving global warming — that’s the surprising thing,” says Armour, who is a postdoc in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. > Oh, another suprise. Scientists dealing with actually settled matters are not so frequently surprised. There are no surprises in science which is actually settled. There are not sudden unexplained and falsifying 20 year "pauses" in settled science. When there is Popperian falsification of theories, the theory is the thing which is bung, not the reality. In my younger days, the Dark Ages and flat earth societies, burnings of heretics and the seething miasma of ignorance seemed like a strange historical thing which was written about but had no relationship with my life and the modern era. Now I realize those same blighted minds are seething still, but by the billion instead of by the million, and not so interlinked in a globalized and specialized world. It's worrying. The opportunity for catastrophically calamitous cataclysms through MADness is now huge. {MAD as in mutual assured destruction} While life was nasty, brutish and short 500 years ago, people could at least go about their lives in one part of the world totally unaffected by self-destruction in another. Paradoxically, the Global Alarmists think that they are the ones warning of such MADness due to CO2 emissions, while I think that THEY are the problem. So far, there has been a fantastically net positive from global integration. I hope it continues. But history suggests it won't. It never has done for more than a couple of hundred years before some mass MADness takes over again. Maybe Peak People in 2037 will enable MAD to be avoided. It will be the first time ever than Malthusian MADness has not forced itself on humans by population growth exceeding resources. Unfortunately, fighting for power has become so intrinsic to human societies that the Malthusian drive isn't even necessary for it to continue. They fight because that's what they do. Maybe they'll Darwinize themselves out of the gene pool. Blessed will be the meek for they shall inherit the Earth. Mqurice
