By the way, do you know how much energy there is in a square meter of sunlight at high noon at the equator?

Do you have a context for that? Take a coal plant. The plant itself takes up space, but so does the security perimeter, the strip mine, the coal processing facility and the disposal of the waste from the processing and the fly ash from the burning of the coal. The footprint is a lot larger than you think...

About 1000 watts. These people claim to have a 1000 watt panel. Perfect.

I had no idea panels have gotten so big. There are a number over 300 W

but, I digress. Do you know how many square meters we have?

Renewable Energy: This Map Shows How Much Room Is Needed To Supply The ENTIRE WORLD With Solar Energy

Renewable Energy: This map shows how much room we would need to cover to supply the ENTIRE WORLD with solar energy – And it is much smaller than what you think! Photo: Nadine May (figure 12 in the diploma thesis)This map above shows the areas to be covered by SOLAR PANELS to deliver enough solar electricity for Germany (De), Europe (EU-25), and the entire world. Of course, the tricky part is collecting that energy and converting it into useful electricity with solar panels

Total Surface Area Required to Fuel the World With SolarAugust 13, 2009

Dividing the global yearly demand by 400 kW•h per square meter (198,721,800,000,000 / 400) and we arrive at 496,804,500,000 square meters or 496,805 square kilometers (191,817 square miles) as the area required to power the world with solar panels. This is roughly equal to the area of Spain. At first that sounds like a lot and it is. But we should put this in perspective.
