With careful design, perhaps you can give the user some warning when they ask for a search among a user (like steve, Marshall or Janice) who has umpty-thousand posts, or other large, slow, searches.

That would give the victim who asked for a nasty search a chance to either quit, or do something else in another window while they waited....
