The Catholic crusades were started because there was a GLUT of mercenaries in Europe showing allegiance to many different princes and constantly warring among themselves....the Pope decided to give them a common cause when the Byzantine empire ask for help against the Turks.....When they finally took Jerusalem they showed their Christianity by killing every man woman and child in the city. So GOOBER..the crusades were started by greedy princes looking for land and spoils and so that the barbaric mercenaries could vent their thirst for KILLING and other horrific deeds outside Europe....The Pope sanctioned it and off they went......when SALADIN recaptured Jerusalem he acted much more Christian by sparing the inhabitants...letting the native Christians stay and opening it back up to Christian pilgrims as they always had.
