LA to SF is a long distance phone call, but not a long distance train ride. That would be something like San Diego to Seattle.
HSR is suitable for trips when it becomes faster than driving or flying. When it takes an hour to get to the airport an hour before your flight, rail will get ya there sooner, and it's cheaper than building more freeways and airports.
It's something only great countries can do. That's why we're building one, and the US isn't.
