Marc Stiles Staff Writer- Puget Sound Business Journal Email | Twitter Bellevue Square, the region's fourth-largest mall, made a splash last week when The Wall Street Journal reported that sales at the Tesla store hit a whopping $5,500 per square foot in January 2014. That's likely a U.S. record for any retailer, mall owner Kemper Development told the paper, and 10 times higher than at other malls with luxury tenants. These properties generated $550 a foot in the third quarter of last year, research firm Greet Street Advisors reported. Strong sales at electric car company Tesla (NASDAQ: TLSA) and tech companies like Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MFST) are boosting the fortunes of shopping centers at a time when traditional mall anchors like JC Penney (NYSE: JCP) are struggling. Fortunately for Bellevue Square, JC Penney closed its store in the center, which has Apple and Microsoft stores in addition to a Tesla outlet. Kemper Freeman Jr. recently told the Business Journal it took 12 years to get JC Penney to leave the shopping center, and only 30 days to lease out the large space to specialty retailers once the retail giant finally did agree to leave. When the smaller shops open later this year, "about six times more business will be done in that box," Freeman said. Bellevue Square logged $1,071 in per-square-foot sales in 2013, up from $842 the previous year, The Wall Street Journal reported. Sales at malls nationally were an estimated $478 a foot in 2014, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers . Freeman discussed the success of the mall with the Business Journal in 2013. Tesla's store at Bellevue Square is relatively small: only 1,800 square feet. The mall's Apple store is 12,200 square feet, and Microsoft's is 8,900 square feet, The Wall Street Journal reported. | View All bizjournals.com
