Motorola, 3Com Technologies To Be Part Of 56K Modem Standard

MANSFIELD, Mass. (Dow Jones)--The International Telecommunications
Union reached a tenative agreement to meld technology developed by
Motorola Inc. (MOT) and 3Com Corp. (COMS) to create the V.PCM
standard for 56K modems.

In a press release Wednesday, Motorola said the V.PCM standard
provides for industry-wide interoperability of the 56K modem technology.

The company said it expects official determination of the standard at the next
meeting of the ITU Study Group 16 in late January, with final ratification of
the standard expected by September 1998.

Motorola said it expects to release software upgrades based on the V.PCM
standard for its software modem and modem chipsets in the first quarter
1998.
