I read the book, and I watched the movie. Wish I could bump into the author, Amy Tan, who I hear is living in Sausalito.

I don't remember much from the husbands in that book, though. It focused on the women, of course. The only thing I remember is that many women I knew, who had a crush on Russell Wong, hated his character in the movie and transferred that hate to the poor actor.

The husbands were pretty mild mannered in the movie.......the only one I really remember is the one where the mother died and he gave her daughter the feather after the mother's passing. It was the women in the movie that were the dominating personalities. In fact, one of the daughters had become a door mat for her husband played by Andrew McCarthy. He was going to leave her but didn't when she become more assertive. It seems to be a theme in Chinese culture with the men either being weak or badass/corrupted players. Who knows what the reality is.
