For many years, no passport has been required to pass from one Schengen country to another. But there is a requirement to produce a passport to enter the Schengen Area. For example, if you fly directly from the US to Germany, you go through passport control in Germany. There are no exceptions to this.

Depends om where you depart from. Germany let people on board with now ID at all - scandalous IMO -, Denmark doesn't.
