6Gb magneto-optical disc specification.....................

Group Sets Specs for Large-Capacity
MO Disk

December 18, 1997 (TOKYO) -- The advanced storage
technical conference (ASTC) group organized by 15
companies in the United States, Europe and Japan set a final
specification proposal (Version 0.9) for the AS-MO magneto-optical
disk with a storage capacity of 6Gb on a single disk with a 12-cm.
diameter.

Although distribution of the specification proposal had been expected
to start around October 1997, it will instead start from January 1998
because of continuing discussions about the track format and other
items.

The track format does not employ the usual wobble format that uses
the entire track. It has adopted a new method. No wobbles are to be
embedded in the region that records data, and a method addressing
information is embedded in the header section of the sector using
wobbles.

Crosstalk to the magneto-optical signals caused by the wobbles
reportedly can be prevented. However, usable storage capacity will
decrease as it is no longer possible to record data in the header section.

As for the clock signal, a method called fine clock mark will be used.
