You should go get a copy of IS95(c), which is also called medium data rate. It defines combining up to 8 data channels into a single session channel. This means that with the 14.4k channels which is the US standard, one can push data at 115k baud if the ASIc can handle it. It is an on-demand type system which allows the user to dial in the speed in which they want to go.

The current speed for most IS-95 channels is 14.4k. Actual effective thruput is 12.7k.

Your right in that if the world spent alot more time optimizing slower channels for better thruput it would result in alot more systems for everyone. Slow things like Email need not be demand things, but rather continuous things. This will make it appear to you and me as fast things.
