stories about VPN are popping up all over. here's the latest from Info Week. Microsoft Introduces Software For Virtual Private Networks icrosoft said today that software aimed at Internet service providers, telephone companies and other network service providers who want to offer virtual private network services to their customers, is now available. Internet Connection Services for Microsoft RAS Commercial Edition is a customizable VPN and telecommuting package with security, authentication, and centralized-management features, Microsoft says. The package builds on the VPN capabilities provided in Windows NT 4.0. The VPN market -- today worth about $205 million -- is expected to grow more than 100% each year through 2001 to $11.9 billion, of which about $8.85 billion will be in services, according to a recent report from Infonetics Research Inc., a consulting firm in San Jose, Calif. The study projects that 92% of large service providers will offer VPNs by next March. VPN technology establishes secure communications tunnels over private and public IP-based networks so data can travel on what appears to be a private network. Companies can set up their own VPNs using VPN-based hardware and/or software, or they can buy VPN services from a number of providers that now offer the technology. The corporate version of the Internet Connection Services is included in the NT 4.0 Option Pack, which starts at $99.95. The software will be included in NT 4.0 Server early next year. also, check out SHVA website for white paper on VPN including inf. on strategic collaboration with Nortel to establish the giant SW Bell VPN.
