When I said we'd had a mild Winter I may have spoken too soon.

Even so, the South so far has escaped the worst of it.

To give you an idea of how mild it is here, there is a certain type of cherry tree that blooms in late January. This year it bloomed in December before XMAS. The daffodils which usually start blooming late Feb were blooming in late January at the same time as the crocuses. I have never seen them both bloom at the same time. The tulips started coming out in mid January...I know because I was stepping in the garden where they are located not knowing they were up and crushing them. Usually tulips don't start coming up until mid to late Feb. Two weeks ago, I got bit my mosquito. I was shocked that they are out already. Same with other insects that we don't usually see until March/April. Its remarkable how mild it is here.

As for the snowpack which is critical to the well being of all the western states, we're screwed. While precipitation has been fairly normal for WA state, its not come down as rain, not snow, because of the higher temps. That means in the summer months the reservoirs won't be filled by snow melt. The eastern 2/3 of WA state needs that snow melt because they are heavily dependent on irrigation. They get much less precipitation than the western third of the state. That is true up and down the west coast. So I imagine we will be experiencing water rationing in some parts of the western states.
