Only visited Catania.....went to the top of Etna and toured a little of the town.... Two weeks later Etna erupted and killed a few tourists... btw, I am not of Italian extraction, my maternal grandfather came from Bialystok...

No, my mother went there at age 87 or so, supposed to be quite a treat! 'Roman' ruins in Machu Pichu??? Far fetched, isn't it?Talking of Sicily and (greek) ruins, have you ever been to Agrigento?Still Italy, fortunately not (yet) in the straight African invasion line like Lampedusa.
No, no Roman ruins in Machu Pichu....they are Incan ruins..at about 13,000 feet....not that old built around 1840, colony died out or left....the ruins were discovered in 1910 and are in near pristine condition.. The construction and engineering is amazing...will visit in April...

Agrgento....no did not visit, but it looks like the Parthenon.. Lampedusa...a fairly small island, we've cruised all over the Mediterranean but did not stop there... Last ancient ruins of note for me were at Ephesus, built 3000 yrs ago by the Greeks on the coast of Ionia, essentially in Turkey, a city for the rich.....had indoor plumbing and hot water....one of the ancient wonders of the world.
