An assertion of faith ... are niches filled by natural selection?

There are large flightless birds in sub-Saharan Africa, Australia, and southern South America (ostriches, emus, and rheas). Yet there are no such creatures in North America, Europe, or Asia. Why not? North America and central Asia have large grasslands and desert areas similar to those where such birds live elsewhere.

New world monkeys are claimed to be descended from African monkeys who made it across the Atlantic on rafts of vegetation swept out to sea. But why didn't natural selection fill the niche before that w/o having it having to be colonized? Why not great apes in the America's ...where niches existed which would have supported them.

Sometimes ecological niches are filled ... by means we don't always know, sometimes they aren't.
