Florist, 70, facing 'ruin' rejects state's '30 pieces of silver' 'You chose to attack my faith … to threaten my very means of eating'

by Bob Unruh
wnd.com

A Washington state florist facing “ruin” for her decision not to support same-sex “marriage” through her business has rejected out of hand an offer to settle a state claim of discrimination against her.

As WND reported this week, Benton County Superior Court Judge Alex Ekstrom authorized the state and the homosexual plaintiffs to pursue the business and personal assets of Barronelle Stutzman, including her home, in payment of damages and attorneys’ fees.

The Alliance Defending Freedom confirmed Ekstrom granted a summary judgment in the case against Stutzman, meaning it will not proceed to trial. A trial had been scheduled for March 23. But the ADF said it would be appealed.

Last month, Ekstrom ruled Stutzman was personally was liable for the claims against her, placing her business assets, her home and personal savings at risk.

The judge ordered this week that the state and the homosexual plaintiffs, each of whom filed lawsuits, could collect damages and attorneys’ fees from Stutzman.

“The message of these rulings is unmistakable: The government will bring about your personal and professional ruin if you don’t help celebrate same-sex marriage,” ADF Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner said at the time.

“The two men had no problem getting the flowers they wanted,” she said. “They received several offers for free flowers, and the marketplace gives them plenty of options. Laws that are supposed to prohibit discrimination might sound good, but the government has begun to use these laws to hurt people – to force them to conform and to silence and punish them if they don’t violate their religious beliefs on marriage.”

On Friday, in response to a settlement offer relayed through a news release from Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Stutzman was blunt.

She told Ferguson in a letter posted online: “Your offer reveals that you don’t really understand me or what this conflict is all about. It’s about freedom, not money. I certainly don’t relish the idea of losing my business, my home, and everything else that your lawsuit threatens to take from my family, but my freedom to honor God in doing what I do best is more important.”

She continued: “Washington’s constitution guarantees us ‘freedom of conscience in all matters of religious sentiment.’ I cannot sell that precious freedom. You are asking me to walk in the way of a well-known betrayer, one who sold something of infinite worth for 30 pieces of silver.

“That is something I will not do.”

Ferguson did not respond to a WND request for comment Friday.

In a news release Thursday, Ferguson said he would settle the state case against Stutzman for $2,001. That included $2,000 in penalties under the Consumer Protection Act plus $1 for costs and fees.

But he also demanded “an agreement not to discriminate in the future.”

“I pray that you reconsider your position,” Stutzman told Ferguson. “I kindly served [plaintiff Rob Ingersoll] for nearly a decade and would gladly continue to do so. I truly want the best for my friend. I’ve also employed and served many members of the LGBT community, and I will continue to do so regardless of what happens with this case.

“You chose to attack my faith and pursue this not simply as a matter of law, but to threaten my very means of working, eating and having a home. If you are serious about clarifying the law, then I urge you to drop your claims against my home, business and other assets and pursue the legal claims through the appeal process.”

She wrote: “Since 2012, same-sex couples all over the state have been free to act on their beliefs about marriage, but because I follow the Bible’s teaching that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, I am no longer free to act on my beliefs.”

ADF’s Waggoner said the “attorney general’s offer is this: pay penalties, be quiet, and give up your freedom.”

“So not much has really changed. He’s had nearly two years to end the threat to Barronelle’s freedom and livelihood. It is interesting that this ‘offer’ only materialized after his crusade to ruin this 70-year-old grandmother was exposed nationally,” Waggoner said.

Stutzman was sued by the state and Ingersoll after she declined to provide flowers for an event she believes is forbidden in the Bible. Ingersoll was referred to several other willing florists and actually was offered free flowers.

Stutzman said: “America would be a better place if citizens respected each others’ differences and the government still protected the freedom to have those differences. Instead, the government is coming after me and everything I have just because I won’t live my life the way the state says I should. I just want the freedom to live and work faithfully and according to what God says about marriage without fear of punishment. Others have the freedom to say or not say what they want to about marriage, and that’s all I’m asking for as well.”

Waggoner said a “government that tells you what you can’t say is bad enough, but a government that tells you what you must say is terrifying.”

“The lesson from the court’s decisions is that you put your home, your family business, and your life savings at risk by daring to defy a government mandate that forces you to promote views you believe are wrong.”

Stutzman operated under the name Arlene’s Flowers of Richland, Washington.

According to arguments in the case, Washington officials believe the state’s statutory protections for homosexuals trump the Constitution’s protection of religious liberty.

ADF had argued that the flower corporation was set up under a Washington law that protects personal assets except in cases of knowing fraud, deception or theft, none of which is alleged in the case.

Liberal Newspeak to Plain English Translation Table

Using George Orwell’s 1984 as an instruction manual, today’s oligarchical collectivists have reduced language to a tool for implementing their agenda. The politically correct doubletalk that serves them as language obscures the actual meaning of what they are saying because it is specifically intended to.

You can translate their malarkey into plain English with the help of a handy online translation table.

Parent calls 911 after public school refuses to release child (wouldn't take Common Core test)

The opt out movement has sprouted up across the country in the last year amid concerns the federally funded standardized tests are collecting personal data on students beyond how well they’re reading and writing.

Fox News reported parents sent a letter to then-Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett with their concerns about the extent of data that could end up in state and federal databases.

“The personally identifiable information includes information on every student’s personality, attitudes, values, beliefs, and disposition, a psychological profile called Interpersonal Skills Standards and anchors,” reads the letter sent to Corbett in December.

“This data has been illegally obtained through deceptive means without the parents’ knowledge or consent through screening, evaluations, testing, and surveys. These illegal methods of information gathering were actually fraudulently called ‘academic standards’ on the [Pennsylvania] Department of Education website portal.”

“This follows them from the cradle to the grave,” Tracy Ramey, of Pennsylvanians against Common Core, told FoxNews.com.

While some states allow opting out of testing, others, like Florida, do not.

To fight back, parents are instructing their children to take the initial step of participating – breaking the seal on a test booklet or logging into the test on a computer – but then refuse to do anything else.

The Ohio legislature passed a bill that bars schools from punishing students who opt out.

Prior to the legislation, state officials and educators said students could face “serious consequences, including third-graders not advancing to fourth grade and high school seniors denied diplomas,” according to WCPO.

Sarah Palin Shames Hillary Clinton Into Press Conference To Explain Email Issues…
.................................................................................
The Last Refuge Blog ^ | March 9, 2015 | Sundance

In less than an hour Sarah Palin achieved something the rest of the punditry and media class were unable to do.

Pay attention to the time.

At 3:42pm Eastern time Sarah Palin tweeted her shot at Hillary Clinton:

(TWEET-AT-LINK)

Those who follow political discourse could immediately hear the sound of the speed dial clamoring amid Media Matters and Team Hillary.

(TWEET-AT-LINK)

And within an hour the following report from CNN via MediaIte:

“Hillary Clinton will likely hold a press conference over the next few days to address the controversy over her use of private email accounts while secretary of State, according to reports.

Bloomberg cited a “source close to Clinton” who said she will speak to reporters to push back at criticism over her use of private accounts for official business”….

The Bloomberg report was sent out at 4:21pm

[…] Two sources close to Clinton said Monday that the former secretary of state will likely hold a press conference in an effort to push back on a week of speculation about why she used the private account instead of one hosted by the State Department. It would also present an opportunity for Clinton to defend her family foundation’s acceptance of contributions from foreign donors during and after her time at State.

A press conference addressing perceived secrecy and potential ethical lapses isn’t what Clinton wants to be doing in mid-March, and she and some of her close advisers had hoped to put off answering questions about her e-mail account until she formally launches her campaign, almost certainly in April.

But their desire to ride out the storm was overtaken by a sense that their initial attempt to let some air out of the controversy—via a tweet conveying Clinton’s request for the State Department to release her e-mails—hadn’t done enough to ease the tension. (link)

Well played Mrs. Palin, well played. Even after all these years, you are still living rent free in their heads.

New head of Clinton Foundation tried to suppress campus conservative group

..................................................................................

The American Thinker ^ | 3-11-15 | Thomas Lifson

There’s no danger that the tax subsidy granted to donors to the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation will be used to benefit conservatives. Not if the new president of the 2-billion-dollar slush fund foundation has anything to say about it. The Daily Caller reports:

The outgoing University of Miami president tapped to head the Clinton Foundation once tried to block a conservative group founded by four female students from organizing on campus.

Donna Shalala, who also served as President Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, was recently hand-picked to take over as CEO of the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to global health and to improving health and wellness for women and girls.

It was the 2002-2003 school year when Shalala and her university administration rejected an upstart group, Advocates for Conservative Thought, on the grounds that it would be redundant since the school already had a College Republicans chapter. (snip)

Shalala’s administration rejected the group three times — in November and December of 2002 and in January 2003. ACT pushed back against the school’s argument that it would be redundant, pointing out that College Republicans endorse a specific party and specific candidates. Some of ACT’s founders were registered Democrats who advocated for conservative values, they argued.

Shalala’s reasoning was a pretty thin excuse, and it did not survive scrutiny:
[The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education – FIRE] pointed out that the University of Miami hosted a number of organizations with shared values. The school had multiple Muslim groups, a number of groups for black students, multiple groups for Asian and Hispanic students and a couple for environmentalists.

FIRE sent a letter to Shalala on April 7, 2003, and received response that a policy change was “under consideration.” But COSO followed up with its decision weeks later, informing the group that it would not be approved but could apply again the following semester. No guarantees were provided.

That response generated outrage and national media coverage.

Under growing pressure, Shalala finally caved and called for a reversal of the policy.

I think it is fair to suppose that in her new job, Shalala will push the limits, Clinton style, in rationalizing political activities as worthy of tax subsidy. Her bias is obvious, and her willingness to serve as a tool of the Clintons is unquestioned. A perfect fit, you might say.

Obamacare’s five years of failure
..............................................................................................................
The results of the president’s health care law have broken his promises

By Logan Albright - - Sunday, March 22, 2015

On March 23, 2010, exactly five years ago today, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law. Virtually no one had actually read the law, and still fewer understood the full implications of a government takeover of health insurance markets. Now, five years later, we are experiencing these effects firsthand.

Obamacare was sold to the American people — unsuccessfully, since most people opposed it at the time of its passage — as a social safety net to help poor people, to stop them from having to live at the mercy of ruthless insurance companies, and to ensure that every American, regardless of income, could get the health care they needed. For many, it was a compelling story, but like all things that sound too good to be true, it turned out to be nothing but smoke and mirrors.

Obamacare doesn’t help the poor; in fact, it hurts them. It doesn’t provide them with opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty, it doesn’t help them find jobs, and it doesn’t increase their access to medical services.

The following are five specific ways Obamacare is making life worse for America’s poor.

First, Obamacare forces the poor to buy insurance they can’t afford.

The least popular feature of Obamacare is undoubtedly the individual mandate, the requirement that everyone buy health insurance whether they want it or not. The trouble is, not everybody can afford this product. Depending on your age, health and the state you live in, the lowest premium plan acceptable under Obamacare can run into hundreds of dollars a month. And if you can’t afford that? No problem, you can just pay the penalty. In 2015, that comes to $325. If that sounds bad, it’s nothing compared to 2016, when the penalty will spike to $695. While some people will qualify for subsidies to help offset the cost, these are far from universal, and many are now having to pay back subsidies they thought they qualified for.

Second, even if you have insurance, it’s too expensive to use.

An insurance deductible is the amount you have to pay out of pocket each year before your plan takes over and starts picking up the tab. Under Obamacare, the plans with the lowest premiums have the astonishingly high average deductible of $5,181. How many people have five grand lying around to drop on a medical treatment? Certainly not the people who lack employer-provided care and are forced into the Obamacare exchanges. What good is insurance if you have to go bankrupt to use it?

Third, Obamacare redistributes wealth from the young to the old.

Older people tend to spend the most on health care. They also tend to have the most money, having had an entire lifetime to accumulate wages and investments. Yet under Obamacare, insurance companies are forbidden from charging older people more than three times as much as younger ones. This means that young people, who typically earn the least in wages and spend the least on health care, are being forced to subsidize older generations.

Fourth, Obamacare is driving people off private plans onto Medicaid.

Do you remember “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan”? Too bad it turned out to be a whopping lie. While the Obama administration claims that the number of new enrollees in Medicaid proves that Obamacare is increasing access to care, a Boston University-Harvard Medical School study found that 80 percent of new enrollees were shifted off their private insurance plans. Obamacare is forcing poor people off the insurance they had and liked and into a poorly run government program that many doctors now refuse to accept.

Fifth, Obamacare is causing doctors to call it quits.

The best insurance policy in the world is no good if you can’t find a doctor. Medical school admissions are down 6 percent, and the Association of American Medical Colleges is predicting a doctor shortage of 160,000 by 2025. A survey by the Doctor Patient Medical Association Foundation found that 83 percent of doctors have thought about quitting because of Obamacare.

In short, Obamacare is raising costs, not lowering them; decreasing access, not expanding it; and making things far worse for the very people its supporters claim to care about. It’s been five miserable years. Let’s not let this train wreck of a law have another five. FreedomWorks’ “Ten Principles for Replacing Obamacare” presents ideas on how we can bring patient-centered reform to America’s health care system, and scrap Obamacare for good.

As US lets Yemen fall, Israeli ire pales next to Arab fury [Against USA/Obama]

The Times of Israel ^ | Thursday, March 26, 2015 | Avi Issacharoff

Jerusalem is worried by the Iran-backed Houthi takeover of Aden, but Saudi Arabia is burning with anger, and not at Tehran

It’s little surprise the group got Jerusalem’s attention. In almost every demonstration held by Houthis in recent months, the slogans heard may as well have been taken straight out of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran: “Death to America, death to Israel, curse the Jews, victory to Islam.”

The Houthi Zaidiyyahs belong to a Shia school of Islamic thought which is distinct from the beliefs held by Shiites in Iran, but they act in accordance with the regime in Tehran, which supplies the Yemenite rebels with advanced equipment that allows them to wage battle on the forces of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

As the rebels have managed to sack much of the port town of Aden, pushing Hadi out of his home Wednesday and sparking Saudi-led airstrikes, the concerns on the Israeli side are clear.

Firstly, an Iranian takeover of the strategic Bab el Mandeb Strait and the possibility of a Israeli ships coming under fire with no one officially taking responsibility for such attacks would not bode well for the Jewish state.

But aside from the threat of assaults on ships, the Iranian-Houthi takeover of Yemen raises another serious concern for Israel, namely, the potential rising influence of Iran in the region, which will allow the Islamic Republic to improve its position during negotiations on the country’s nuclear program.

Obama’s race to chaos

.......................................................................
NY Post ^ | 3/29/15 | Michael Goodwin

If you’re confused about the Saudi Arabia-led air attacks against Islamist rebels in Yemen and can’t tell one group of head-choppers in Iraq and Syria from another, don’t despair. All you need is imagination.

Close your eyes and imagine that those countries and terrorists have nuclear weapons. Imagine their barbarism going nuclear as they blow up cities, wipe out ethnic and religious groups and turn the region into cinders.

Now open your eyes and realize you’ve seen the future, thanks to President Obama’s policies. It is a future that will be defined by Obama’s Wars. Yes, plural.

I’ve written frequently about the likelihood of a dystopian “Mad Max” scenario if Iran gets nukes. My thinking is guided by a belief among American military and intelligence officials
that a nuclear exchange would take place in the Mideast within five years of Iran getting the bomb. To judge from events, the future is arriving ahead of schedule.

The fact that a top Saudi official wouldn’t answer a question about the kingdom’s plan to get nukes is an answer in itself. Proliferation in the world’s hottest spot was guaranteed once Obama abdicated American leadership, a decision that led our adversaries to conclude we would not stop them and our allies to conclude we would not protect them.

A future where it would be every nation for itself was trouble enough, but something far worse is unfolding now. Obama’s courtship of Iran and his willingness to let it go nuclear is speeding up the race to chaos.

Iran wants it both ways — nukes and a free hand to impose its Islamic Revolution throughout the region. Against all good sense and the lessons of history, Obama is saying yes and yes.

Sightings of the Revolutionary Guard leader, Maj. Gen. Qasem Suleimani, leading Iranian-sponsored militias against Islamic State in Iraq has spread alarm throughout the region. The fears reached a fever pitch when Iranian-allied Houthi rebels took over Yemen, chasing out our soldiers and allies with chants of “Death to America, death to Israel.”

Iran long held designs on a Shia Crescent and control over Arab lands, which helps explain why Egypt, Saudi Arabia and others counted themselves as our allies. They are furious as they watch Iran get a nuclear pass from Obama and a green light to expand its power.

The nuclear program will have the United Nations stamp of approval, as will Iranian control of four Arab capitals — Damascus, Beirut, Baghdad and now Sanaa, Yemen. Indeed, Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry suggest Iran even could be an ally in the fight against Islamic State and al Qaeda. Already there has been coordination there, leading critics to say America is acting as the Iranian air force.

Israel, of course, sees the pattern as insane and a threat because Iran has threatened to wipe it off the face of the earth. In retaliation for complaining about the nuke deal, Obama denounces our ally and threatens to “re-evaluate” our support for the Jewish state.

But Israel is not alone, with our Sunni Arab allies also viewing Iran as their mortal enemy. Sen. John McCain quoted one of those Arab leaders as concluding, “We believe it is more dangerous to be a friend of America’s than an enemy.”

These are unprecedented developments, veering so far from the norm and happening so fast that consequences are piling up faster than they can be comprehended. Alliances built over decades are shattered in a relative flash, inviting aggression and endless conflict. The toxic brew of Islamic fanaticism and nuclear proliferation could ignite a world conflagration.

These are grim thoughts, expressed because it is impossible to imagine any other outcome of Iran’s rise. It remains the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism and supports Hezbollah and Hamas and now the Houthis in Yemen. As for Iranian influence in Iraq, one analyst is calling Suleimani, the Revolutionary Guard commander, Iraq’s new “viceroy.”

Remember, too, Iran muscle and munitions are keeping Bashar Assad still standing in Syria. The wholesale death and destruction there — an estimated 200,000 people killed and millions displaced within the country and out of it — could be a prototype of its new empire.

While there are many dark and complex forces in play and blame to spread around, the most important catalyst of the violent disorder has been the reversal of America’s policies. Under Obama, we have switched sides, an abomination that ensures a legacy of infamy.

The IRS Loses a Big Procedural Battle in Its War With the Tea Party

The Daily Signal ^ | 4/6/15 | Hans von Spakovsky

At almost the same time last week that the outgoing U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Ronald Machen, gave Lois Lerner a get-out-of-jail free card over her contempt of Congress citation, the Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service suffered a huge procedural loss in a court fight in Ohio.

In litigation filed in 2013 by conservative organizations targeted by Lerner and her colleagues at the IRS, a federal judge granted a motion to compel and ordered the IRS to produce the names of the 298 targeted organizations identified by the IRS for the Treasury Inspector General.

In 2013, NorCal Tea Party Patriots, the Faith and Freedom Coalition of Ohio, the Texas Public Policy Foundation and a number of other conservative organizations (ten in all), sued the IRS, the Treasury Department, Lois Lerner and other individual IRS employees.

They described themselves as organizations “comprised of individual citizens who have joined together to exercise their rights to freedom of speech and expression” and who “dissent from the policies or ideology of the” current administration. They claimed that, on the basis of their beliefs, they had been subjected “to delays and intrusive scrutiny during the tax-exempt status application process.” According to the ten plaintiffs, this violated the Privacy Act, the First and Fifth Amendments, and 26 U.S.C. §6103, a federal statute that protects the confidentiality of tax return information.

Opinion: Campus speakers should be chosen with discretion.
Daily Tar Heel (UNC)
Published 04/16/15 11:47pm
Excerpt:

David Horowitz’s speech at UNC earlier this week, sponsored by the College Republicans among other organizations, has rightfully provoked an outcry, including a social media campaign, #NotSafeUNC, which highlights the various ways students who are members of marginalized groups at UNC are made to feel unsafe.

The groups and students Horowitz attacked have already responded effectively.

They have rightly pointed out Horowitz’s prejudice, his conflation of Muslims and Arabs, and his dangerous narrative of a clash of civilizations. Critics have also pointed out the mindless insensitivity of the College Republicans in inviting his hatemongering to campus in the aftermath of the shooting of three Muslim students earlier this year.

But Horowitz’s appearance is also an example of college campuses lending their gravitas to speakers who offer little intellectual heft to back up their cultural prominence.

Just last week, Duke University invited former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to speak about President Obama’s foreign policy despite Romney’s lack of practical or academic experience in the subject.

<edit>

Universities, and by extension, student groups, have a responsibility to promote serious discussions about controversial issues. This responsibility is inextricably linked to universities’ statuses as safe havens for free speech.

UNC’s College Republicans and Duke should not lend the pageantry and platforms they did to speakers such as Horowitz and Romney if they will only use their platform to advance ideological agendas with little grounding in academic discussions of these critical issues.

North Miami Principal Removed After "Insensitive" Comment

A Florida high school principal has been removed from his job after commenting online in support of the Texas police officer who resigned after a video surfaced showing him manhandling a black bikini-clad teenager and pulling his gun on other black teens, according to officials and local media.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools
said in a brief statement on Wednesday that North Miami Senior High School principal Alberto Iber had been removed. It added a replacement would be announced shortly.

The statement did not specify what prompted the move, but stated that district employees “are required to conduct themselves, both personally and professionally, in a manner that represents the school district’s core values.”

The Miami Herald newspaper on Wednesday reported that Iber had posted a comment on an article published on its website supportive of McKinney, Texas police Corporal Eric Casebolt.

“He did nothing wrong,” Iber wrote in a comment that displayed his Facebook picture, name, school and title, according to the newspaper. “He was afraid for his life. I commend him for his actions.

Casebolt, who is white, resigned on Tuesday after being seen in a video responding to a disturbance at a pool party last Friday where he appeared to target black youths, an incident that has added to a national outcry against racial bias in U.S. policing.

Casebolt’s attorney, Jane Bishkin, said on Wednesday that the policeman was emotionally fraught at the time of the incident after having earlier responded to two suicide calls.
