Don't forget, in discussing a timeline for Merced, that while it will
likely appear in 1999, it is also clear it will likely be available
only as an expensive high-end chip for the first year. So even if
Apple ports Rhapsody to Merced, it won't compete with their desktop
stations until 2000 at the earliest. Three years is a lifetime in
the computer industry, long enough for PPC to gain market. Moreover,
it is unclear if Merced will catch up on the low-price end to PPC,
since clearly MOT and IBM don't plan to stand still while INTL and
HWP develop new product.
