WASHINGTON (AP) -- A St. Louis food processing
company is recalling 500 pounds of salami that may be
contaminated with harmful listeria bacteria, Agriculture
Department officials said Thursday.
John Volpe and Co. is recalling its "Volpe's Filzette Salame"
that was distributed to Italian specialty stores in St. Louis,
Los Angeles, New York and New Orleans.
Consumers should look for 1-pound and 1 1/2-pound
packages with a sell-by date of "053198" on the label and
"EST. 978" inside the USDA inspection sticker, also on the
label.

The Agriculture Department discovered the potential
contamination during routine monitoring.

In healthy people, listeria usually causes short-term
symptoms such as high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea and
diarrhea. The microbe can cause miscarriages and stillbirths
in pregnant women and serious infections in the frail, elderly
or ill.

Sri.
