With all the sanctions and Russia's messed up economy, Putin needs their gas money as much and probably more than they need the gas. Merkel and Hollande have been playing *kiss*kiss* with Putin for years, getting lots of fat Russian contracts for their German and French industries. That's the real reason they are playing pussycat with Putin.
