AbstractBefore the Syrian uprising that began in 2011, the greater Fertile Crescent experienced the most severe drought in the instrumental record. For Syria, a country marked by poor governance and unsustainable agricultural and environmental policies, the drought had a catalytic effect, contributing to political unrest.

Back around 1000, most of Syria and the area north of Baghdad were covered with forests. The land was fertile and crop production was great.....hence the name the Fertile Crescent. However over the millennium, there has been considerable deforestation........the land has eroded and the local climate has become drier. Adding to the mix, the idiot Bashar al-Assad did some crazy experimenting with agriculture during the aught years making things worse. We need to create a special, enclosed island for people like al-Assad and Putin.

But again, seeing the effects of winter out East .......really brings home the impact climate change will have on this country. The US already has far more extreme weather than places like Euro. And its only going to get worse.
