Learn your history. Kerry got deferments for college, just like Cheney. After college, Kerry applied for additional deferments so he could go to grad school in Paris. But the draft board turned him down. So he joined the Navy Reserves, thinking he could avoid going the Vietnam. Then his unit got called up unexpectedly, and he spent three and a half months in Vietnam before coming home with his third scratch.
