A kid I grew up wore female dance costumes at dancing lessons as a first grader, I think everyone knew was gay from the outset. A friend who I ran with in the 9th-12th grades (Charles) who told us, his male friends, when we were in 9th grade that he was gay. We just said, "No, you're not, that's bullshit." By the 12th grade it was pretty evident. I also knew a kid who was sexually abused by his brother at an early age who believed he was gay at junior high school age, but ended up not being, although he is seriously schizophrenic today. All sorts of stuff happens that shapes people's beliefs when they're young. The difficult thing is that most of these people believe they were "born gay" and that it wasn't a choice for them. While I'd like be able to say, "They must know what they're talking about," the reality is that THAT would be anecdotal, and NOT scientifically determined. Maybe science will be able to draw a conclusion next week, maybe never, I don't know. But as of today, there is no scientific evidence that a "gay gene" exists. People can think it must be all they want -- and I understand the political reasons why they must -- but it just doesn't make it true. My takeaways from this incident -- a) A lot people "believe in science" when it is convenient to do so, and will quietly ignore science when it isn't; b) Ben Carson, when it comes down to it, has no more backbone to stand up against political correctness than the next guy, and that is disappointing; and c) Some persons with scientific minds, when corrected, cannot admit they were wrong. I had this occur on a thread consisting primarily of systems engineers in which I participate. Even after the proof was shown to them, some of the comments went sort of like, "Okay, maybe that's true but Carson hates gays." Which, of course, isn't at all what was said. Carson states facts, that must mean he hates gays? The sad thing is that rather than explain it to the public in a way that makes sense, which I know you can't do during a campaign, he was forced to back off the original comment -- certainly because his campaign manager said, "In politics, there are no choices."
