All this talk of 'software developers' beavering away in Java/etc and so setting the scene for the Microsoft coup ... er, excuse me, Microsoft employs several thousand programmers who write pretty good code, so who cares what the global disparate programmers of the world write in? When was the last time you bought a s/ware application from a bunch of programmers who had written some 'neat code'?

People go into superstores and buy shrink-wrapped Corel, MS Office, etc. Corporates get a load of MS CDs with everything on and send out to their offices.

eSuite is cool. Applix Anyware is cool. MS Office is dull but does the job - always will; no way will it lose that market - a fool would only think so - akin to suggesting Ford is complacent and is about to be toppled by some hot-to-trot new Korean car which is technically better - who gives a damn, when 9 out of 10 people will go for a Ford over an upstart technology from an obscure un-braned source (don't get me onto branding - that is by far Applix's BIGGEST problem)!?

I understand your points but too many people here think that if - eg - Gilder writes something it must be placed on a pedestal and paid homage to.

Business and s/ware procurement is more akin to Dilbert. Bet he uses MS Office.

Best wishes.
