Telecom sets up for cup
11 June 2002

Telecom is setting up for the America's Cup with a network that will provide data for television graphics based on its CDMA mobile network.

Telecom's manager of America's Cup technical operations, John Warne, says the 027 CDMA network was chosen for its reliability and ability to send regular "packets" of data quickly, securely and cost-effectively.

The race data network uses a number of "orange boxes" developed for Telecom by ECONZ.

They contain global positioning satellite receivers, small management computers, and modems that transmit key data from the boats.

Data includes wind speed, wind direction and latitude and longitude that can be used to create a graphical representation of the race.

The data can be sent up to five times a second and is transmitted via mobile sites around the race course.
