Granted, the borrow and spend policies put in place by Reagan has done a lot of damage to the economy because of the massive debt we've incurred. And much of that money was spent on the military which doesn't have much positive economic effect. Our withdrawal from space activities meant that we wasted the 1980s and 1990s with respect to building infrastructure in space. Thankfully, NASA and others were able to keep developing the technology to the point where high net worth individuals can fund things like SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace. With those two components in place, doing things like mining the Moon and/or the asteroids becomes very doable.

As far as workforce participation rate being low, you do realize the biggest component of that drop is because Boomers are retiring? Granted, the number of discouraged workers is still too high, but their numbers have been dwindling for a while now.
