Dimi,

Thanks for the post, I kept searching for a website I might have left open in the background that was making the noise. I'll have to give the concept a bit more thought before sending a recommendation.

Yikes, I really don't like the sound, and don't see why it is needed. I hope it will be optional!

Was going nuts trying to find the source of the weird sounds...went and disabled notifications in Malwarebytes, thinking it might be that. Then I happened to notice a speaker icon appear and disappear on my SI tab, which made me look at SI a little more carefully...I do not see how this enhances anything.

The most important thing will be to ensure that when the little speaker icon is clicked off, it stays off, unlike the link to normal SI a/k/a 'classic version' which once reverted to the cartooney subjectmarks page around every two weeks or so, and now seems to do so in very few minutes, i haven't timed it but estimate ten to twenty, a constant irritation with no evident purpose ... you may not recall, but i did suggest a fix of that about six weeks ago, your reply indicates that you would 'extend the cookie to several months in the next build'? -

It may be a useful tool for the Chinese government or the NSA or anyone doing research.

It may be a security risk.

Toggling off the audio icon isn't enough. A moderator or Emcee should be able to turn it off for the thread (or a default of Off), and a member should be able to toggle off in Settings to opt out at the member level.

I have SI open in multiple tabs on one device and in 1 tab on another. I don't want noises and I don't want to encourage noises.

I'd like a new Setting for Post or Read, so a member can Set it to Read only and not inadvertently post, until he knowingly Sets it to Post. Or, if you enable Emcee control, a Setting to Post Only to threads whose Emcee opts out of the Noise and Bllinking Alerts.

The premise is a dumb idea that likely will reduce posts, and reduce the value to advertisers.

Feedback....

For awhile it was driving me nutz to figure out where the noise was coming from. I have two monitors and often have SI on a window behind my email so I bring it to the front when I want to read or post straight in front of me. It took awhile to find the speaker and click it off. I'm happy as long as it stays off.
Your feedback on actual experience, and constructive ideas and suggestions on how any of the interface update might be best improved would be most welcome.

I bookmark people sometimes just to keep track of some that don't post much and I might want to look up what they said.... ie.. I have them marked to find quickly if I want their opinion, often as a contra indicator. I have no desire for sound any time any of them post.

On the other hand, some things like new msgs directed to me I might want the notification on since I often have conversations and it is helpful to know I got a reply. I'd turn it on for that if I could suppress the noise from the people I might have bookmarked who post nonstop.

Maybe make a window like facebook that lets you set notifications for the various activities if you want to get more to use the feature. Also, have a global off and on switch.

thanks

I dont want to hear sounds for either of these:

Visual: If this would increase your total number of SubjectMarks with new posts, The yellow number representing your SubjectMark count will flicker along with the word "SubjectMarks". Otherwise, only the word "SubjectMarks" itself will flicker.
Audio: This sound

New post by a Member you have PeopleMarked:
Visual: If this would increase your total number of PeopleMarks with new posts, The yellow number representing your PeopleMark count will flicker. Otherwise, the word "PeopleMarks" itself will flicker.
Audio: This sound

Thanks a lot! I went nuts for a week trying to figure out where the sound was coming from. I FINALLY spotted the sound button on your site and turned it off.

You should have notified everybody. I just posted it to a site and at least one of my posters was still at wit's end over it. Put a banner up telling everybody!

I like being able to turn the sound on for late night tv viewing. Let's me know I have something to read during commercials...
