After you get past the empire building, ie: land...lets not forget the breeding rights these monarchs earned for themselves. So land & breeding rights, maintaining dynasties, lets make that two major considerations. Charlemagne like his Islamic brothers were doing lots of procreatiing & copulating in the name of God. In fact they hailed & acknowledged each other, his counterparts in Baghdad.
