John, yes, I agree, that with the state's attornies stepping into
the fray, the last part of your comments are relevant. MSFT saying
they will intentionally ship inferior product is putting themselves
right in the path of a consumer protection action by the states.
Up to now, MSFT has been able to play the "pro-consumer" role in
the fight with DOJ in the minds of the public, by claiming their
actions are delivering better product/lower cost. Now, it may be
perceived as MSFT willing to give the consumer the shaft because
they can't get their way with the courts. Very bad PR decision,
IMO. However, it is very hard to really estimate the long term
impact of even the worst case scenario on MSFT: will it stop the
train, slow the train, or just be a momentary rough ride?
