Apple was actually the first individual stock I ever bought.

I bought 100 shares for about $23 in about 1993, and sold them 7 weeks later for $35, and thought to myself "this is the most imazing thing in the world. I haven't lifted a finger, and I made $1,200!!!"

I did something similar with a penny stock - I think it was Pacific Snax, a maker of potato chips - and sold them in a month for a small profit. I thought this was also incredible.

Then I bought shares in a company called MediaVision for about $4. Six months later they went bankrupt or were delisted in some fraudulent accounting scheme thing, and I learnt that it doesn't always turn out nice and peachy :-)
