While I don't pretend to know the law surrounding the treatment of Congress under the ACA, my understanding is that they don't receive subsidies (since they would not qualify under the law) but that, as an employee of the federal government, the government picks up the tab for the policy. This is a proper outcome. This is requiring them to have the same insurance coverage others in the country do, but does not require them to give up their employer paid health care. It is a fact that some people WILL lose their insurance as a result of Obamacare (many already have, many more will) -- but the point was to make them live with the same insurance they forced on Americans generally. >> 2) Or he and his wife could do the same thing as other members of Congress and buy insurance directly from private insurers, bypassing the exchanges. Rep. Diane Black (R-TN), among others, is doing just that. Here’s a list of providers in Texas. Those are exchange plans. They can be purchased only through the health insurance exchanges. You cannot buy insurance outside of those plans. >> 3) His wife could sign up for COBRA benefits and keep the couple’s existing health insurance. Sure, but COBRA benefits are controlled by ACA also. So, then, you'd just be bitching about that. And of course, COBRA is subject to costs and limitations that there is no reason to tolerate. >> 4) Or he could do what Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-FL) and Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) — returning the premium-sharing to the federal government. He hasn't said whether he might or might not do that so I'm not pre-judging it. Anyone can simply choose to pay extra money to the government at any time. Including you. This is just ridiculousness, a case of the far left media trying to "get" Ted Cruz. And it worked. One of my facebook friends, a well known news reporter, was all over the story claiming hypocrisy. I pointed out to him there can, by definition, be no hypocrisy, since Cruz was effectively FORCED into the sorry-assed program by the law which he opposes. It is absurd, and an effort to ridicule someone you don't agree with, but those of you who are making this case end up looking ridiculous yourselves. Just stop it. >> Because he wants the “illegal” premium-sharing offered by evil law-breaking Obama Ridiculous claim. The "premium sharing" isn't offered by Obama. It was a benefit of his work. That's just being ridiculous. If you want to tell Congress that you refuse to pay any longer for its insurance, fine, tell them that. Suits me fine. While you're at it, tell them you don't want to pay for Pelosi's jets, either. But until then, don't be shocked when they expect the taxpayers to do what their contracts call for.
