Respond to of 69300 FL Abortion Bill: 24-Hour Waiting Period Plus Ultrasounds 3.30.2015 News Peter Malcolm The Florida Legislature may well pass a bill that would force women to wait 24 hours once they made an appointment before the procedure could be done. House Bill 0633 would make a woman have a session of counseling before returning the next day for the abortion. Rep. Jennifer Sullivan, R-Mount Dora, the sponsor of HB 0633, said, "My purpose is to empower women to have 24 hours to be able to reflect on the possible complications of having an abortion or of not having one." John Stemberger, a religious conservative attorney and strong supporter of the bill, said, "We want to choke this procedure with regulations that will pass constitutional muster." Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, another religious conservative, said an increasing number of Americans are rejecting abortion, adding, "Sometimes our job is just to stand until the culture reflects what is right, The hearts of people are turning." Elizabeth Nash of the Guttmacher Institute, a stridently pro-abortion group, admitted that Florida abortions drooped from 94,360 in 2008 to 84,990 in 2011. She argued that the bill to induce waiting periods meant nothing because 90% of women wanting abortions have their minds made up before they make any appointment. Florida American Civil Liberties Union director Howard Simon, furious with pro-life bills, snapped, "These are all concocted regulations that are designed to shut down abortions for women, deceitfully marketed as concerning health. They're written by politicians, not doctors. They're about politics, not women's health." One of the provisions of the bill that surely troubles abortion advocates, who don’t want mothers to see images of the child they are murdering, reads : The physician who is to perform the procedure, or the referring physician, has, at a minimum, orally, while physically present in the same room, and at least 24 hours before the procedure in person, informed the woman of: The nature and risks of undergoing or not undergoing the proposed procedure that a reasonable patient would consider material to making a knowing and willful decision of whether to terminate a pregnancy. The probable gestational age of the fetus, verified by an ultrasound, at the time the termination of pregnancy is to be performed … The person performing the ultrasound must offer the woman the opportunity to view the live ultrasound images and hear an explanation of them. The bill does offer the mother the opportunity to refuse seeing the ultrasound, stating, “The woman has a right to decline to view and hear the explanation of the live ultrasound images after she is informed of her right and offered an opportunity to view the images and hear the explanation.”
