[SINGAPORE TELECOM LAUNCHES MAGIX VOD - ATM Backbone] I've been following the interesting Ethernet v. ATM discussion here. A couple of times, I wanted to toss in a comment, but never did. I found a tidbit today from the ATM Digest which finally pushed me over the edge. A huge assumtion is being made by those who say that Ethernet will be around forever because it's so deeply entrenched. The problem is that the assumption is considering only existing environments. There is an enormous, new infrastructure which hasn't even been built yet. It will support data, voice and multimedia to the house. With ATM's ability to measure out QoS, it seems ideal - in fact, from what I've been reading, ATM was DESIGNED for this! Most home computers, etc. are not configured with Ethernet NIC's, which means that there is no - ZERO - embedded Ethernet base which needs to be dislodged. At least that's what I very much hope. I'm a computer programmer by trade, but no expert on ATM. After having read many very good things about Yurie Systems in the trade publications, I finally decided to buy some last week. Steve Here's the snippet: Singapore Telecom last month launched Magix, a premier broadband multimedia service that leverages the Singapore ONE ATM network. Magix offers fast Internet access, online shows, news, shopping, interactive learning, games, music and financial services on a subscription basis. Oracle's Video Server is used to store, manage and deliver the full-motion, TV-quality video and high fidelity audio available from Magix. To access the service, subscribers need a multimedia PC, an ADSL modem and ATM NIC, which are available from Singapore Telecom and its authorized vendors.
