Just a couple of notes.

First, Jaz2 isn't the only thing delayed. The Quest drive was originally announced nearly a year ago, and the announcement in November said it would ship before the end of the year. Now they're talking March or April.

Second, lest anyone be confused, backward compatibility with the 1.4MB drive is not important, but some kinds of inter-product compatibility are. For example, if I buy a SparQ drive and a bunch of disks, then get a Quest drive, I can't use the media I already have in the new drive.

Iomega's decision to make Jaz2 backward compatible with Jaz makes good sense from a marketing perspective. And it protects the consumer's investment in the Jaz and Jaz media. And it makes it less likely that a customer will decide to simply buy another company's product when it's time to upgrade.

Maintaining compatibility within product lines is more difficult technically, however, which is why SyQuest, being in a catch-up position in the market, has had to abandon it.
