Reading accounts of the ground war during Afghan one, our SF always had a problem with keeping their Afghan troops fighting when things got hairy. They would tend to bug. We did best with lots of CAS and then let them walk though the remnants. Arabs, like most poor armies, do well when holding a defensive position but not well on the attack.

The Israeli tactical fights were the hardest in the Sinai during their 67 war was when they came up a dug in Egyptians. Once they got them moving, it was "bug out boogie" time. Same in 73 during the latter part of the fight. In 67, if the Israelis had been able to pull a "Godfather" and set down with Nasser and tell him that either his brains or his signature was going to be on a Peace treaty it could have been over then. LBJ wouldn't back them up fully and I think they didn't believe they had done as well as they had. The Soviets made noises and we forced them to quit before they had complete victory.

The Kurds are willing to fight - perhaps because it is their homeland they are fighting for.

Somehow ISIS is the one group willing to simply fight.

The stakes are getting unusually high for the Saudis, Egypt and other Sunni countries in the area. The U.S. is not going to help them keep their countries stable (and the oil flowing, in case of the Saudis). If anything, by now they have reason to think that the US is rather more on the side of the Shia. The ME Is in danger of becoming a nuclear powder keg. So, if they can't get going now, they probably never will.
