Microsoft's DirectX is widely regarded as a poorly implemented hack which ostensibly provides reasonably fast, vendor-neutral multimedia functionality such as 3D images. OpenGL is better suited to high precision applications but it's not widely used outside of workstation-style applications like CAD and data visualization. The SGI announcement is probably a step toward standardizing it for all types of applications, whether they need it or not, and that's a good thing. Of course, it will require a minimum of 200MHZ/64M/2.1G to run but that may not be a big deal a year from now.
