Another Org. that needs a couple of fax's on the facts---------- Thursday December 18, 11:02 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: National Food Processors Association NFPA Applauds Seafood HACCP Regulations WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On December 18, 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's regulations on the use of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) systems by the seafood industry became effective, Dr. Rhona Applebaum, Executive Vice President for Scientific and Regulatory Affairs for the National Food Processors Association (NFPA), made the following comments: ''The food industry has strongly supported the move to HACCP. This isn't a case where government imposed regulations on the industry; rather, industry brought HACCP to the government and worked with the government to develop effective regulations. HACCP provides an added tool for maintaining our nation's seafood supply as the safest in the world. ''NFPA believes that the use of HACCP will make our nation's seafood supply even safer. This is not a response to an emergency, but rather a systematic, scientific approach to preventing food safety problems before they occur. ''The movement toward establishing seafood HACCP rules -- and the adoption by the seafood industry of HACCP principles and methods -- has been an evolutionary process. We applaud FDA for listening to the comments of NFPA and the food industry and for making the effort to learn how HACCP can best be applied in real-world situations. The result is a rule that will work to the benefit of government, the seafood industry, and -- most importantly -- consumers.'' NFPA is the voice of the $430 billion food processing industry on scientific and public policy issues involving food safety, nutrition, technical and regulatory matters and consumer affairs. NFPA's three scientific centers, its scientists and professional staff represent food industry interests on government and regulatory affairs and provide research, technical services, education, communications and crisis management support for the association's U.S. and international members, who produce processed and packaged foods, drinks and juices.
