He may or may not have been a Klansman. During the 1960s and 1970s the Klan went underground in most places. The FBI was pretty effective at shutting down those who were too public. They tried to have a more presentable public face during the 1980s under David Duke, but wasn't all that successful. Most Klans have disintegrated and/or merged with other white supremacist groups like the NeoNazis.
