In his one run where he actually did get elected, it was on a few thousand votes in a special election. Every Republican politician distanced himself from Duke and Duke was never a successful politician by any measure. OTOH, Bob Byrd represented the Democrat party until he died. Decades. And continued as a functioning racist until near death. There really is no comparison.
