As I understand it, clik is intended for a different market, one that I am only beginning to appreciate: the potentially vast digital imaging market, dig. cameras & such. So maybe I should modify my statement: It is important to maintain backward compatibility with one's own family of previous products - in a given target market. I haven't paid much attention to clik, my impressions of Iomega are based on the here & now. It may be great but I'm not leaning on that. I think of it as a different branch in the Iomega family tree. Or some such image.

I can understand your passion about this, up to a point: you prefer the Syproducts on a technical basis, the way that I prefer Macs. And people say, but there are so many more Windows machines out there, and I bristle and say, so what? And then I take a deep breath, and you should too.

Since they have already said that they will have an adapter so that you can use Clik! in flash card slots, I see no reason an adapter cannot be made to use a Clik! in a Zip machine.

RE: Backwards Compatibility.

Rocky,

>> And where does the upcoming 40MB Vapor! drive fit in with its lack of compatibility with ANY other Iomega drive, including Zip? <<

This is kind of scary. I think I finally found something on which Rocky and I agree.

I was just about to reply to Eve and ask about the release of Jaz, and why it didn't have to be compatible with Zip. Clik is another good example.

I don't think that backward compatiblity is necessary if the application or target market is different. [And I see that Eve addressed this in a later message.] With Iomega, this can be demonstrated with:

Clik: Consumer Products
Zip: Low-End Removable Storage
Jaz: Professional High-End Storage
Ditto: Tape Backup

Inside each category, there is compatibility. Zip and ZipPlus are compatible. Jaz and Jaz2 are compatible. DittoEasy, DittoMax, and DittoMaxPro are all compatible.

The difference with SyQuest:

44/88/200/270: Low-End Computer
EZFlyer 135/230: Low-End Computer
SyJet 1.5: High-End Computer
SparQ 1.0: High-End Computer?
Quest 4.7: High-End Computer

With SyQuest, they have multiple product lines that aren't compatible. The SparQ doesn't really fit at the high end or the low end, and isn't compatible with anything else.

Rocky, you've gotten so prolificly redundant, I must now skip past all posts of yours, as well as the replies. Calm down. IOM's pain is not your gain, since you didn't have the nerve to go short. No amount of posting will make up for that.

Geez, I was trying to catch up with 150 posts and posted this in response to something yesterday. Wouldn't you know, Rock goes long seconds before I posted.

Welcome to hell Rocky. <g>
